For those not familiar with Nvidia's new (supposedly ass-kicking) GPU architecture, here's the goods.
These cards should be available for the first time -as I understand the rumors / leaked info- sometime in the next 30 days or so. What's harder to devine is whether Nvidia will be smart enough to release Mac versions from the start, and work the drivers to the same point of maturity at the same rate as Windows drivers.
They've clearly made a commitment to the high end Mac market with the older GTX 285 and Quadro FX 4800, but I think those cards are *still* using the POS drivers from last June, when they were first introduced... effectively making them no better than a Radeon 4870 for many non-gaming tasks. Meantime AMD/ATI has come out with the 5870 and 5890, which both seem like beasts but probably will never see them on Mac unless Apple chooses one for its next Mac Pro rev. Hopefully that's early 2nd quarter as well. I think the new Westmere Xeon parts are shipping now so who knows.
Any thoughts or info on Fermi for Mac that you guys have? For reasons I can't state, these cards are going to be a really big deal for certain software apps. Would suck if Nvidia doesn't treat us as first class citizens from the start, even if we do have fewer models (which is inevitable).
